Kangaroo Island

112 kilometers southwest of Adelaide and at the entrance of the Gulf of Saint Vincent, Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island
lies 13 kilometers offshore from Cape Jervis and on the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Covering an area of 4405 sq. km and with a 509 km long coast, the island's economy revolves around tourism and fishing as well as agricultural produce such as honey, wool, meat and grain.

The island is mostly covered by vegetation, out of which around 33% has been conserved for National and Conservation Park purposes. The five Wilderness Protection Areas here include the Flinders Chase National Park, Seal Bay Conservation Park, Cape Gantheaume Wilderness Protection Area, Cape Bouguer Wilderness Protection Area and the Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area.

The isolation of Kangaroo Island from mainland Australia has rendered the place free from foxes and rabbits while animals such as kangaroos, sand goannas, brown bandicoots, wallabies, possums, echidnas and seals thrive here.

Things to See and Do

With native bushlands, wildlife, pristine beaches and adventures in the daytime as well as beachhouses, local wines and sunsets in the evening, Kangaroo Island has plenty to offer for visitors. Other popular activities include marine tours, fishing, sailing, cruising, surfing, swimming, scuba diving and picnics at the island's renowned beaches.

Events are also held here regularly including the Kangaroo Island Gourmet Gallop featuring homegrown gourmet delights, the island's premier racing event in the Kangaroo Island Cup Carnival and the Elders Kangaroo Island Field Day where the latest in new technology and innovations are demonstrated.
