Perth
Isolated on the west coast of Australia is Perth, the capital of Western Australia and the fourth-largest city in Australia. The city was founded on 12 June 1829 by Captain James Stirling to serve as the political centre of the free settler Swan River Colony. During the mid-20th century, Perth became known as the "City of Light" when residents lit their house and street lights to greet American astronaut John Glenn during his orbit of earth on the Friendship 7 spacecraft.
