The Yarra Valley features a range of boutique vineyards which, facilitated by the region's cool climate, produce high-quality chardonnay and pinot noir as well as premium sparkling wines. Many vineyards also serve sumptuous lunches for guests from their cellar-door restaurants. Other popular activities in the area include ballooning with a glass of champagne while viewing the hills and vineyards, bike riding through old trails, walking through national parks, visiting the Healesville Sanctuary wildlife park and browsing through the local produce stores. The Yarra Valley Farmers' Market is held on the third Sunday of each month and showcases the finest foods that the region has to offer. In October, the Shedfest Wine Festival offers visitors the chance to sample wine by selected wineries.
Getting to Yarra Valley
The Yarra Valley is located about 60 km from Melbourne and the journey by car will take approximately an hour. Cars and motorbikes are the preferred method of touring the region, particularly if you plan on exploring the off-road wineries. Alternatively, you can catch a suburban train to Lilydale and catch a bus from the train station to Healesville or Yarra Glen.
