Murray River
As Australia's most important inland waterway, the Murray River forms most of the border between Victoria
and New South Wales. Flowing over 2700km from the Great Dividing Range in northeastern Victoria to Encounter Bay in South Australia, it is the third-longest navigable river in the world. Years before roads and railways transported pioneers and explorers across the land, paddle steamers carried passengers and supplies, connecting the various towns and remote sheep stations along the way. The river towns today still evoke memories of the old river boat days preserved through museums, historical buildings and restored paddle steamers. See our detailed Murray River map.
