Conway National Park is situated on the Whitsunday Coast in Queensland just behind the seaside village town of Airlie Beach. Protecting the largest area of lowland tropical rainforest in Queensland outside the tropical north, this 22,500ha park includes the rainforest-clad Conway Peninsula with its steep rocky cliffs that provide a spectacular 35km-long backdrop to the Whitsunday Passage and surrounding islands. Winding through Conway National Park are a number of walking tracks for bushwalkers of all levels, from the relatively easy 1km Circuit Track passing through lowland rainforest, to the more challenging 5.4km Mt. Rooper circuit track with its natural lookout over Swamp Bay. The park is home to two of Australia's mound-building birds, the Australian brush-turkey and orange-footed scrubfowl. Emerald doves and sulphur-crested cockatoos can typically be seen around the area as well. If you're lucky, you may also be able to spot the rare and endangered Proserpine rock-wallabies that live at the park's northern end. The Swamp Bay walk-in camping area overlooking Daydream Island provides a pit toilet, picnic tables and a shelter shed. Both fishing and swimming are permitted at Swamp Bay and Coral Beach. Be advised, however, that fishing regulations apply, and stinging jellyfish inhabit these waters from October to May so swimming should be avoided during that period.
