Far North Queensland
Although small geographically, the wild and rugged tropics of Far North Queensland boasts some of the
most fascinating and diverse natural wonders found in Australia, and quite possibly the world. Rich and dense tropical rainforests from the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area dominate the region's landscape. Nestled in them lie hidden destinations such as the village of Daintree and Cape Tribulation where a blend of adventure and relaxation await those who venture within. Along the coast are long stretches of beautiful pristine beaches which glamorous resorts and retreats for the affluent and fashionable such as Palm Cove and Port Douglas have taken full advantage of. Serving as a backdrop to the coast is the highland region of the Atherton Tablelands where volcanic craters, waterfalls and large trees are par for the course. Amidst all of this is the popular tourist town of Cairns which serves as one of the major gateways to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Located just offshore, the renowned reef is arguably the most extensive and spectacular coral complex in the world. The northernmost reaches of the region are a 4WD adventure haven. Isolated and sparsely populated, the area includes the historic settlement of Cooktown as well the huge triangular Cape York Peninsula which lies at the very tip of Australia.
