Queensland's North Coast

Queensland's North Coast encompasses the region between the town of Bowen at its southern end
Queensland's North Coast
to the start of the state's Tropical Far North region in Cairns.

Townsville

Towards the south and near the coast, the sunny and vibrant city of Townsville is Queensland's second-largest city where picturesque waterfronts and friendly locals blend seamlessly with an active military base.

Lying just offshore from Townsville is the alluring Magnetic Island, a natural paradise where bushwalks and wildlife encounters complement an array of outdoor and watersports activities at attractively developed bays, each with their own beaches, eateries and shops.

North Coast Hinterland

Inland, west from Townsville is the North Coast Hinterland that stretches for some 800km to Cloncurry. Along the way are the isolated and historical mining towns of Ravenswood and Charters Towers.

Townsville to Mission Beach

The road northwards from Townsville brings us to the beautiful Paluma Range National Park. The tropical rainforest straddles the Paluma Range west of the Bruce Highway and features stunning views of the surrounding coast as well as secluded picnic areas, rock pools and waterfalls.

Further along is the quaint township of Ingham, the port hamlet of Lucinda, the seaside holiday village of Cardwell that's one of Queensland's oldest towns and Tully, known to many as the wettest place in Australia.

Just off the coast nearby is the breathtaking Hinchinbrook Island where rising granite mountains provide a striking contrast to the lush tropical forests, sandy beaches and dense mangroves that make up the rest of the National Park.

Mission Beach

The route northwards leads to the idyllic Mission Beach, a collection of four charming seaside settlements each with their own beach and collection of shops and eateries. The area is a hotspot for a range of exciting activities as well as rainforest walks where encounters with the rare cassowary are common.

Ferries and water taxis depart regularly from Mission Beach to the resort islands of Dunk Island and Bedarra Island. The exquisite islands are the perfect escape for couples seeking that exclusive getaway where secluded beaches, walking trails and uninhabited islands are just waiting to be discovered and explored.
