Just 5 kilometers from Cairns, the beautiful Flecker Botanic Gardens draws locals and visitors alike to its vast peaceful grounds where tropical plants, flowers and vegetation thrive in their natural state. Step back in time through the years back to 1886 when this superb area was first developed, and gaze around you at the spectacular growth and evolution that has transpired since. Unbelievably tall trees, tropical climbers and exotic palms spread wide and high, having matured over the many years. Beneath them, the beauty of colourful flowering shrubs, ginger plants and other fragrant wonders are on display while the grounds are carpeted with fascinating fungi and left to decorate themselves with whatever may bloom from wafting seeds. Take a guided or self-tour through the boardwalks of the only Wet Tropics garden in Australia and witness the range of exotic and rare plants on display here along with the quaint orchid house and fernery. For those in the mood for some refreshment, the Information Centre and Bookshop serves morning and afternoon tea along with meals while providing maps, guidebooks and information brochures for visitors.
