The privately owned Hamilton Island is one of the busiest islands in the Whitsundays. In the wake of extensive development here, the island at times feels more like a small town than a resort. Located on the island is an airport servicing direct flights from the mainland as well as a huge marina and plenty of restaurants, bars, shops, accommodation and activities to choose from. While it isn't exactly a paradise getaway and escape, the island is a convenient base from which to explore the rest of the Whitsundays as well as the surrounding Great Barrier Reef. Fantasea Cruises can take visitors on cruise tours to the reef while scenic flights with stunning views can be arranged with Hamilton Island Aviation. Other activities available include snorkelling and dive trips, kayaking tours, sailing, fishing or simply indulging yourself at the island's Relaxation Centre. Children are well catered for at Hamilton Island with free meals, plenty of activities and childcare available in case parents need a bit of time by themselves. Day trips to Hamilton Island can be organised with Fantasea Cruises from Shute Harbour near Airlie Beach and includes use of a selection of the resort's facilities.
