Long Island, just like its name, consists of a narrow stretch of land, about 11km long and just over 1.5km wide, lying close to the mainland forests. The island is made up primarily of national park and has some good walking tracks, through the rainforest to Sandy Bay or up Humpy Point, with some excellent lookouts along the way. There's a quiet camping ground at Sandy Bay run by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS). Contact the QPWS Whitsunday Information Centre at Airlie Beach for more information. Alternatively, the island also has three comfortable resorts beginning with the boutique Peppers Palm Bay resort that features tropical-style cabins and bungalows nestled on the shores of Long Island's Palm Bay. Club Crocodile Resort Long Island is located at Happy Bay and has more basic rooms for couples and families. Both Peppers and Club Croc can be reached from Shute Harbour near Airlie Beach via the Blue Ferries service run by Fantasea Cruises. For a more exclusive getaway, the South Long Island Nature Lodge combines comfortable waterfront cabins with great food and service. The beautiful and secluded resort is accessible only by helicopter. Contact the lodge for available packages and transfer options. There are a variety of outdoor activities and watersports on offer at the island which you can arrange at any of the resorts.
