The St Mary's by the Sea church was first constructed in 1911 from the remains of the Port Douglas Catholic church that had been tarnished by a cyclone. After many years, the condition of the church deteriorated before it was finally restored in 1988 and relocated to the parkland on the foreshore where it now stands. Today, St Mary's by the Sea is one of the oldest buildings in Port Douglas. Set in tranquil tropical gardens and parks, the church is surrounded by some truly breathtaking natural scenery including the Coral Sea and the famous Far North Queensland rainforests. A magnificent glass altar window allows visitors to enjoy the stunning views from within the church itself. Naturally, St Mary's by the Sea, with its romantic setting has become the ideal venue for weddings with couples from across the globe choosing to exchange their wedding vows at the lovely chapel.
