Whitsunday Island is the largest of the Whitsundays, covering an area of over a hundred square-kilometres while rising to some 438 metres at the Whitsunday Peak. On the southeast coast of Whitsunday Island is the beautiful Whitehaven Beach. Up to 6km in length, Whitehaven is the longest stretch of beach in the Whitsundays and easily the best of all the islands (and perhaps in Australia). The southern end of Whitehaven Beach is a good spot for snorkelling and the beach itself is an immensely popular spot for cruise boats and day-trippers. A stay overnight here will do wonders for fully appreciating Whitehaven's true beauty. At the northern end of Whitehaven, on the eastern side of the island, is Hill Inlet. Vegetated by mangroves, it's also the natural nesting habitat for various shore and migratory birds. The lookout at Tongue Point provides spectacular views of Hill Inlet and the white sands of Whitehaven Beach. This internationally recognised view of the island and surrounding area has become a visual icon for the Whitsundays and is one of the must-do activities when visiting the region. Numerous campsites on Whitsunday Island are run by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service at the various beaches and bays along the island's coastline.
