Bendigo
Historical Bendigo is a vibrant regional city in Victoria boasting a delightful and attractive blend
of culture, food, art, wine and heritage. During the 1850s, rich goldfields in the area were ripe for mining, attracting hordes of diggers seeking their fortune here. Chinese miners arriving during that time, in particular, would leave a significant and lasting influence on the city. The boom years for Bendigo continued over the next couple of decades where developments funded by mining companies produced the many elegant Victorian-architecture buildings that still line the streets today. The impressive buildings stand as a legacy of Bendigo's rich history, defining the city's character and identity. See our detailed Bendigo map. Things to See and Do
At the end of the tramline in Bendigo is the Tram Museum where a collection of heritage trams have been restored. Guided tours of the museum are included as part of the Bendigo Talking Tram tour which covers many of the city's main attractions as well as the picturesque streetscapes with audio commentary. Also part of the Talking Tram tour is the Central Deborah Gold Mine where visitors are taken deep into a mine shaft to witness mining and drilling operations and demonstrations. The Bendigo Art Gallery is one of Victoria's largest regional galleries with an impressive collection of European as well as colonial and contemporary Australian art. Just across the road from the art gallery is Wine Bank on View. Housed in a heritage building that was once the Union Bank, it features a range of boutique wines that visitors can enjoy along with light meals. Visitors interested in the city's Chinese heritage can visit the Bendigo Joss House, the Goldfields Historical Chinese Cemetery or the fascinating Golden Dragon Museum with its tranquil Chinese gardens, tearooms and displays documenting the city's Chinese history. Other attractions in Bendigo include Australia's oldest pottery works at Bendigo Pottery, wildlife at Bendigo Living Wings & Things and the Discovery Science & Technology Centre located near the railway station.
