The rocky headland of Kirra Point separates two beaches. At the top end towards the south is a large rock groyne known as Big Groyne which marks the end of Coolangatta Beach. At the other end is a smaller groyne known as Little Groyne which protects Kirra Beach up north. The breaks between Kirra Point and Point Danger feature some of the best surf in the seaside surf resort of Coolangatta. In fact, world surfing champion Kelly Slater once declared Kirra Point to be his favourite break. The surf here is challenging and definitely not for beginners, a fact not helped by its popular location where dozens of surfers congregate at any one time.
