Just across the Esplanade at Surfers Paradise is the beach, an ideal place to unwind and relax after a big night out. Stretching for some three kilometres south towards Coolangatta and north up the Southport Spit, Surfers Paradise beach is a clean and relatively safe beach despite the typically large crowds it attracts. During the day, the high-rises and apartment buildings will generally cast large shadows on the beach. If it gets too hard to find a spot in the sun, head a little further north to Main Beach where it's less crowded. While avid surfers will usually head for the waves further south in the seaside surf towns of Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta, there are still good swells for beginners with a northerly wind. There are plenty of surf schools around with two-hour lessons costing about $50. Most people, however, will usually just enjoy crashing around in the waves or riding a boogie-board. Also available are free volleyball courts on the beach while during the holiday period, free beach cinema sessions are held. Every Wednesday and Friday evenings, the Surfers Paradise Night Markets are held along the beachfront Esplanade with an array of unique items for sale.
