Burleigh Heads
Home to one of Australia's legendary surfing breaks, Burleigh Heads lies approximately 7km south of Surfers
in the centre of the Gold Coast coastal strip. The relaxed town with its obvious surf culture offers a unique alternative to the highly developed Surfers Paradise up north. The Burleigh Heads Break Famous for its fast and deep barrel rides, Burleigh is the classic right-hand point break and the best wave in town that attracts the best pro surfers from around the world. International surfing tournaments are held here regularly including the Quicksilver Pro Surf Tournament. The popular break, however, attracts a huge crowd. Experienced surfers should get in as early as possible to enjoy the break before the throng of avid surfers arrives. Beginners, however, should almost certainly stay clear of this sometimes violent break especially with a shore sporting strips of sinister black rocks. Other waves along the beach offer gentler breaks which are more suited to novices. See our detailed Burleigh Heads map. Things to See and Do
The last remnants of the town's history as nothing more than dense eucalyptus and vine forest lies in the Burleigh Head National Park. The park is located on the northern side of the mouth of Tallebudgera Creek and features walking trails as well as a lookout and picnic area surrounded by a forest reserve. The David Fleay Wildlife Park is a wildlife sanctuary in West Burleigh and features walking tracks through mangroves and rainforests while being home to various native wildlife such as platypuses. Visitors can also make the short trip to the neighbouring town of Currumbin where parks and attractions such as the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the rock pools of Currumbin Valley are located.
