Hook Island in the Whitsunday Islands

Hook Island

Located directly north of Whitsunday Island, Hook Island is the second largest of the Whitsunday Islands group and, like Lindeman Island and Long Island, consists mainly of national park.

South of the island is the picturesque Nara Inlet, a popular spot for cruise boats to pull into where visitors can view ancient Aboriginal paintings that can still be seen on the roof of a small cave by the beach here.

The Hook Island Wilderness Resort (Ph: 07 4946 9380) at the southeastern end of the island is probably the most affordable of the resorts in the Whitsundays. The resort offers standard cabins, units and dorms to go with its bar and cafeteria.

Alternatively, there are also a few good campsites run by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) available. Contact the QPWS Whitsunday Information Centre in Airlie Beach for more information.

Hook Island has some of the best diving and snorkelling spots in the Whitsundays, particularly at Crayfish Beach and the reef directly in front of the resort which provides snorkelling gear at no charge to guests.

At the northern and northeastern edges of the island are some excellent coral reefs located around Manta Ray Bay, Langford Reef and Butterfly Bay. Day cruises to these diving sites can be organised at Airlie Beach.
