The term 'Noosa' actually refers to a group of settlements and communities which stretch some seven kilometres along the Noosa River. The main hub of activity revolves around Noosa Heads, particularly the chic shopping and dining district of Hastings Street as well as the more modest line of shops and cafes on Sunshine Beach Road. Further west along the Noosa River is Noosaville and Tewantin while over the Noosa headland on the east side is the discreet Sunshine Beach resort which boast some of the best beaches and surf breaks in the area.
Things to See and Do
The tranquil Noosa National Park extends approximately two kilometres in each direction from the headland, marking the end of the Sunshine Coast. The park provides an ideal location for fine walks, serene coastal scenery and bays with waves for excellent surfing. The main entrance to the park is from Park Rd which has a car park, information centre with walking track maps and areas for picnics. Beside the national park is the Noosa Main Beach and Laguna Bay which lies on a narrow strip of land north of the busy Hastings St in Noosa Heads. Nearby, the Laguna Lookout provides a panoramic view of the surrounding area and can be accessed by foot or car via Viewland Drive from Noosa Junction. Activities There's plenty of opportunities at Noosa for surf enthusiasts with excellent breaks that can be found at various points around the national park. The best, and probably most challenging, of these would be Sunshine Corner which lies at the northern end of Sunshine Beach. Gentler surf breaks are located near Noosa Spit at the end of Hastings Street where many companies offer lessons for beginners. Proficient surfers can also choose to advance further to kite-surfing if it tickles their fancy. The Noosa River is ideal for canoeing with the waterway stretching all the way to Lakes Cooroibah and Cootharaba, the Cooloola Section of Great Sandy National Park to just south of Rainbow Beach. You can hire kayaks or go for a kayak tour here. Other companies also offer cruises up the river from Tewantin to the 'Everglades' area.
